While waiting for our weekly meeting to start, we decided to get a little creative with some of the materials we had laying around. Here is what we came up with:
The only effects we used in the movie were at the beginning and the end. The kaleidescope was made by taping three long mirrors together, and we put a small camera on a tripod on the inside.
Enjoy!
Bryan Saxton, International week and Night Director
January is drawing to an end and everywhere you turn the reminders seem to be everywhere- a myriad of itsy bitsy hearts and pink trinkets. Which could only mean one thing: St. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.
February 14th is a day celebrated by many people around the globe. On this day, people give to their lovers an expression of their love, typically through flowers or chocolates and Valentine cards.
One of the many theories states that the holiday originates from the story of Saint Valentine of Belarus. St Valentine was a heartbroken soul who stabbed a knife to his chest, took his heart and send his still-beating heart to his mistress as a token of his never-ending love for her. These days such miserable gifts are, thankfully, no longer popular, and people celebrate over a romantic dinner, dance, and delightful chocolates.
This year ISA will be celebrating Valentine’s as well, by hosting our annual Winter Formal Dance with the theme ‘Global Heart Warming’. Aside from being a widely-recognized holiday, we thought we’d come up with a catchy theme for a Valentine-related event. Love makes the world go round and what better ways to celebrate Valentine than spreading the message of love all around!
Winter Formal/Prom itself is an American high school tradition where youths dress up in their spiffiest attire, attend the formal, and dance the night away. It is more than just for couples, as it is a chance to see friends dressed up and picture-perfect. So come and celebrate the world’s famous day for loving, bring a camera, eat, drink, and dance along with us!
It’s the already the THIRD week of winter term! We have a lot of events coming up: China Night (by CSA), Chinese “Niu” Year (by CSSA), Indonesian Night (by PERMIAS) and many more. Also, everyone is now preparing for the International Week and Night 2009 (IWN) this spring term which is the biggest event for ISA this year. However, don’t forget our Winter Formal.
This year’s Winter Formal will be held on February 13th (just before Valentine’s Day) in Agate Hall and our theme is “Global Heart Warming.” More details will follow, but get your formal wear and a DATE ready.
We came up with several themes first (such as: Cassanova, Twilight, Key and Lock, Anti-Valentine, etc.) and made our final choice, Global Heart Warming. With luck, we will organize a donation charity towards the American Red Cross to go with our Global Heart Warming theme. Stay tuned for more updates!
The second week of Winter term has begun and the workload on ISA has just gotten heavier. But this is good news for you~ because it means we’re making progress for the biggest event you’re going to experience later in the next few months! =D
This weekend IWN 2009 (International Week and Night) committee heads and interns, numbering 30 people in total, went to Waldport for our yearly retreat. Waldport is located by the Oregon coast and is approximately two hours away by car from Eugene. We rented a very luxurious house called Sand Castle Beach that gave us excellent view and access to the beach (it’s like our own backyard!).Fortunately, the weather was not cold at all. The purpose of this retreat was to allow the IWN staff to get to know each other, familiarize ourselves with the family and of course, plan for IWN! We had group meetings as well as committee meetings during the two and a half days. We brainstormed possible themes for IWN, gave suggestions on how we should improve or differ this year’s events from the last and further organized our approach to the organization and planning of IWN. Generally, our meeting times lasted from two to three hours (except our last one was something like four)! After long hours of discussing, throwing out opinions, voting and re-voting, we have finally finalized this year’s IWN theme to be the following:
Sail Away: There may be rough seas, but there’s a place to be.
How does that sound =]? It’s a combination of three themes we came up with: “searchlight/lighthouse”, “sailboat” and “around the world (in 7 days)”. ISA is very proud and excited about this year’s theme. Please look forward to more upcoming news and updates on our progress~ And feel free to leave us any comments or suggestions you have (whether it’s about the theme or possible ways to present IWN in April)~~
Also a reminder, this week’s Coffee Hour! Same time, same place~~ See you there!!
Hope you all had a great winter break. I know I did, I had a lazy life for three weeks but managed to get out of Eugene and have fun. I almost didn’t want to come back!
ISA is back, as well, and running. We’re done hiring members for International Week and Night 2009, and planning is starting. Our retreat is this weekend, where we’ll probably all be together for the first time since early December, and we hope to build community while setting our preliminary timelines for the huge event.
As usual, we’ll be doing Coffee Hour on Friday, January 9th, in the usual place, the Mills International Center, from 4-6 PM.
Coming up, most likely in February, will be our traditional Winter formal dance as well, which will be very exciting.
As a follow up to our update on I-Week and Night committee heads, our hardworking officers have finally finished hiring and interviewing new ISA members for the event. This draws a conclusion to our call for new interns. Here is a list of all our committees and the members who will be participating in the planning and running of IWN throughout Winter and Spring term.

Welcome to all the new members of our ISA family! From here on they will share with us their different perspectives, new insights and past experiences as we venture through to our success in IWN. If you don’t know them yet, please look forward to meeting them during our event in April, if not earlier.
Also as a reminder, we will be having our last Fall term Coffee Hour tomorrow (Friday). Same place, same time – Mills International Center @ 4pm. Please come for a last cup of Fall term coffee to relax before heading into our studies during the weekend!
Good luck on your finals next week and have a wonderful winter vacation!
Hi everyone! How your Thanksgiving and Black Friday? Hope you all had a good time with your family and friends! Now, as final week arrives, hope everyone can study HARDDDD and earn ideal grades…meanwhile, don’t forget our International Week and Night 2009! It is our biggest event of the year, so we’re already planning for it.
Congratulations to last year’s PR Officer, Bryan Saxton, for being selected as the Director for IWN 2009. Alongside will be Yoon Soo Nam as the Assistant Director.

Stay in touch with us and find out more information next week! Good luck on Dead Week!
Another weekend has gone by and we are entering into Week 8 already. Doesn’t feel like it, does it?
According to my knowledge, here is a brief outline of how time is going to fly:
Thanksgiving holiday arrives, giving us an opportunity to shop like mad
Finals week comes (*insert devastating music here*)
Fall term ends with the start of Winter holidays! Yay~
and then….. zoom zoom zoom! I-Week and Night!!!
IWN doesn’t take place \untill April but trust me, time will fly by just like that “zoom zoom zoom”
What’s special about our yearly IWN is that members within ISA exchange jobs and work on areas not listed under their original job titles. This allows us to expand our outlooks by experiencing different obligations in which we are not accustomed to. But what’s more important is that YOU are invited to work with us! Not as a volunteer but as an ISA intern! Thus, you get the same experience as we do too~ Starting this week, we are recruiting new ISA interns (also known as I-Week and Night Committee Members) to help us with IWN. Positions include the following:
Executive (Director/Co-Director)
I-Night
I-Week
Food
Public Relation
Decoration
This is a great opportunity to have a closer look at how ISA operates, meet the ISA family, join us on our ISA Retreat in January (location TBA), obtain some valuable work experience (while having fun, of course) and be part of the biggest cultural event on campus! ISA needs your contribution to make this event successful! On top of this all, this is a great leadership opportunity, as you can apply to be the leader of the entire event or the Head of one of the committees.
Job descriptions and applications are available by the ISA office beside the Mills International Center. Stop by and visit us even if you are still unsure about your decision Applications are due Friday, Nov 21.
Hey everyone…hope midterms are still going ok! Daylight Saving Time kicked in last weekend, and it’s funny how that slashes Coffee Hour’s attendance. Seriously! It’s because the days now start getting dark around 4 or 5. It’s hard to get out after a tiring week to go back to campus for an event. But Coffee Hour is still going to happen as always, and we love seeing both new and old faces there.
In other news, we have already begun thinking about International Week and Night, which is our biggest annual event, and considered one of the biggest cultural events on campus every year. Sho and Peter, the Co-directors, are brainstorming ideas for how to structure the IWN planning committees, and also looking at fundraising options.
We will be bringing in new people into the ranks of the IWN planning committees, so keep your eyes peeled for applications. IWN offers a lot of leadership and logistical planning opportunities, and it’s a lot of fun. Personally, it’s been one of the most rewarding events I have been a part of at the University.
Hi everyone! How are your weekends? Hopefully it was off to a great start by our Double Life dance party on Friday night!
ISA’s Halloween Party, sponsored by ASUO, was a total blast. This was an opportunity where International Students and domestic students exchange what they have in common — dancing! Because of our DJ and the variety of music he threw out at us, EMU ballroom’s dance floor never stopped vibrating from the stomps of our feet. Not only that, new friends were made, pictures were taken and of course, the spirit of what Halloween is like was brought out to all of us! The theme for this year’s party was Double Life and nearly everyone appeared in their alter-ego facade! Costumes ranged from pirates, princesses, witches and of course, everyone’s favorite classic superheroes.
We had more than 200 people on the dance floor at any given time, and had a total attendance of over 700! This was much more than we originally expected! Thank you to those of you who stopped by, even if it was only for a peek.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed the decorations we had! Our hardworking ISA members personally planned and set up the EMU hallway. We had an maze-like show case of skeleton bones, suicide and a crime scene. Surely they were scary enough, right? Not to mention the dead body in the girl’s bathroom~ Here are some pictures taken by our intern, Stephanie.
(For more pictures, please visit Facebook~)
Our party began at 9pm and went on till 12am. Afterwards, ASUO provided a very early breakfast for everyone down at the EMU Fishbowl until 2 am.
ISA is very proud to have hosted this cultural night and most importantly, is encouraged by all of you that we have successfully brought this party out to the students of UO. Thank you everyone!
